We can charge our energy simply by concentrating on a thought or an emotion. This is why thoughts and emotions get stronger the more attention you give them. A passing thought or emotion has the power to become the centre of your life, unless you let it go.
‘When you’re free from the hold the energy has on you, you will be free to experience the joy and expansiveness that exists within you.’ 1
Through applying this concept of the hold energy can have on you, you can entertain the possibility of using life to free yourself - like a game. If you can let the hold that thoughts and emotions have on you go, you can fee your soul from the otherwise pain and suffering caused. This is the price, to free your soul - letting go of yourself. This is the only practice you need to do to free yourself from suffering - and it is only you who can do this. You are the only one who can give yourself inner freedom, or take it away. Nobody else can do it for you. And remember it doesn’t matter what others do, unless you decide that it matters to you.
This week, experimenting with this notion of letting go, not being bound by the pull of the mind - beginning with small things that shift your energy - it might be someone cutting you off in traffic or the person keeping you waiting in line, or for a meeting or appointment. As it happens, see if you can notice a shift in your energy… and the moment you feel a change, relax your shoulders and relax the area around your heart. The moment you notice the energy moves and begins to unsettle you, you simply relax and release. While simple in theory, this is a life long practice.
Play with letting go and falling behind this sense of being bothered, rather than being caught up in it and allowing it to take your energy away.
Each time you notice there's a trigger in you....and you notice the shift in your energy and perhaps even a contraction in your 'heart space', decide if you're willing to release this in order to liberate yourself? Can you notice it come up and let it flow through you (releasing through your body) so as not to be so affected.
This is how you make freedom a game. Instead of getting into being bothered, you get into being free…..the mind will give you it’s take on why you shouldn't let it go..… it will have a story about the person always being late or you choosing the wrong queue to line up in again, or its opinion on the person you're waiting for or the person cutting you off in traffic - this is what our minds do.... give us thoughts, unbinding, not requested or asked for, and it is useful to remind ourselves that we can choose whether to buy in to the mind's whims and often nonsense, outdated banter or notice it's tendency to criticise and judge and go on and on and on without any conscious request on our part... but we can chose - to get carried away and attach ourselves to these mind whims' or to sit back and watch what it comes up with and how this reflects in our bodies, and let it go.
Play a game - decide no matter what the mind says, you’re not getting involved. Don’t fight the mind, don’t even try to change it; just make a game out of relaxing in the face of its melodrama; learning to release the tendency to be drawn into the energy.
We can see that the energy does have the power to draw you in; at work, at home; with everything and everybody, all the time… our opportunities to practice not being drawn in are endless!
When you feel the pull, like someone pulling on your heart, you just let it go.
Taking some time for introspection this week: sitting quietly and taking a few conscious breaths, as you turn your awareness inwards and reflect 'What can I let go of this week?' It doesn’t need to be the biggest challenge. Start with something small.
