tapas - self discipline

Tapas means heat and refers to the internal fire or energy which drives our inner motivation, our self-discipline.

We cultivate tapas, or self-discipline, by doing what we set out to do despite the obstacles and challenges, distractions and temptations. It’s when we act in a way that respects the greater gains are more beneficial than the short term desires which present themselves each day.

It’s what makes you come to yoga when it’s cold or you’re comfortable on the couch; it’s what gets you out of bed in the morning rather than rolling over and snuggling under the covers; it’s avoiding instant gratification for a greater good.

In class each week we practice cultivating tapas by focusing on the body and breath; a simple practice which helps us be less controlled by our minds that are so want to wandering all over the place; and this simple practice supports us in being more conscious in what we do, conscious in our choices, and how we live our lives.

Reflecting this week; when do I need to remind myself the greater gains are more beneficial than the obstacles and distractions, and the instant gratification? Which aspect of my life needs a little more tapas, self-discipline, a little more effort, for my greater wellbeing? Resolving this week to bring a little more tapas, self-discipline to this aspect; with kindness, as always.

Wishing you a week ahead filled with self-discipline!
